Alex and Jackie

Deep into my 1,000 words a day for Feathered: being a fairy tale. Sometimes this can be a chore, but the words are flowing and there are surprises on every page – almost as if the fairies are guiding my hand. This could be the best Alex and Jackie Adventure yet.

Whenever Alexandra Caroline O’Rourke, AKA Alex, met with trouble, she generally blamed her younger sister, Jackie. And Alex’s sudden engagement to marry a Viking prince, against her will, would probably classify as trouble. If nothing else, a wedding held in 11th century Ireland would make it difficult to invite her friends from San Diego.

Regardless of blame, Jackie was the only person who could help Alex, but Jackie was still in the 21st century. And Jackie had her own problems. It had stopped raining; and this, of course, meant that the fairies had stopped singing. If Jackie could not find a way to make it rain, marauding Vikings would be the least of their worries, because this is Feathered and this is an Alex and Jackie Adventure.

Then the sky shook, illuminated by a dazzling explosion of light and sound and color, the likes of which the sisters had never seen before and would never see again. Fireworks! Fireworks over Boston harbor; moving and glorious, as if Michelangelo had painted the sky at the request of an extravagant Pope. Fireworks! It was New Year’s Day.

First Night

A safe and Happy Year to all my friends. And if you are in Boston for First Night, remember to drop by the Granary and say hello to Sarah Pemberton.

Tom
